St. Margaret Mary Alacoque lived from 1647 to 1690. She was a mystic to whom the Lord and Our Lady appeared on various occasions even before entering religion. [1] While living as a Sister of the Visitation, the Lord Jesus appeared to her and revealed to her His Sacred Heart. Accompanying this revelation were twelve promises in regard to devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This image is an original painting of St. Margaret Mary. The medium used to portray the saint is gouache on watercolor paper. In the painting, St. Margaret Mary holds an image of the Sacred Heart surrounded by a crown of thorns. This is the same image that she described after her vision of the Sacred Heart. Additionally, the saint depicted does not include facial features to express the superior importance of the Lord in this imagery over his poor instrument.
